*** MEDIA ADVISORY *** THIS WEEK: Hearing on “Persuader” Rule, Markup of Bill Addressing Infant Abuse and Neglect

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce will meet this week to examine a new rule by the Department of Labor that will restrict workers’ free choice and employers’ free speech. The committee will also meet this week to consider legislation that will improve efforts to prevent infant abuse and neglect.

On Wednesday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m., the Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions, chaired by Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN), will hold a hearing entitled, “The Persuader Rule: The Administration’s Latest Attack on Employer Free Speech and Worker Free Choice.”

The Department of Labor finalized a rule in March 2016 that requires employers to report on virtually all contact with legal advisors on union-related matters. The rule is a dramatic departure from long-standing labor policies that will stifle the right of employers to communicate with employees and undermine the right of workers to make informed decisions in union elections. This hearing will provide members a chance to examine the rule and the consequences for American workers and employers. To learn more, click here.

On Thursday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m., the full committee, chaired by Rep. John Kline (R-MN), will mark up H.R. 4843, the Improving Safe Care for the Prevention of Infant Abuse and Neglect Act.

Introduced by Reps. Lou Barletta (R-PA) and Katherine Clark (D-MA), the bill amends the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) to strengthen efforts to prevent and respond to infant abuse and neglect by requiring the Department of Health and Human Services to better ensure states are meeting current child welfare commitments. The bill was introduced after a Reuters investigation raised serious doubts about whether current policies are being properly implemented and enforced. To learn more, click here.
